POLICE DETECTIVE WARNS PEOPLE NOT TO VISIT LOS ANGELES DUE TO RISING CRIME:

A Los Angeles detective has warned against people visiting the city due to rising crime rates while adding that police are unable to guarantee their safety. “We’re telling people don’t visit because we don’t think we can keep you safe right now. And that’s just sad to say,” Los Angeles Police Department (L.A.P.D.) detective Jamie McBride said. McBride blamed Governor Gavin Newsom, L.A. County DA George Gascon, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for propagating the Proposition 47 bill that has led to such a situation. “How did we get here? The ACLU advocated for Proposition 47 which changed the sentencing guidelines,” McBride said. “So, right now, you can literally go out and do whatever you want, commit crimes, and you will be out faster than the officers can finish the report, and that’s a fact.”

Supporters of the bill claim California’s prisons are now less filled with prisoners because of it, while opponents say that lawbreaking has surged as many crimes, that were earlier felonies, such as shoplifting, are now considered misdemeanors, and offenders are easily let out. Based on 2020 data from the Public Policy Institute of California, Los Angeles reported a 40% increase in homicides from the previous year, while Oakland, San Francisco, and San Diego reported 36%, 41%-48%, and 50%-58% hikes respectively. “We’re wondering how many times somebody has to be arrested here in L.A. before they stay in jail,” said McBride, adding that there’s a lot of violence in the city and that’s unsafe for people to go shopping.

Los Angeles was number one in the top 10 worst cities in the U.S. for retail crime, according to a 2020 survey by the National Retail Federation. The Californian cities of San Francisco and Sacramento were also featured on the list. The Bay Area has especially been hit with a spate of retail theft. When asked whether low bail and Proposition 47 were considered compassionate policies as expounded by progressives, McBride said that the criminals are not out for grabbing “milk, meat, cheese,” but “Rolex watches,” hitting “jewelry stores,” and “Louis Vuitton stores.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) made a controversial statement last week to The Washington Times when she said, “A lot of these allegations of organized retail theft are not actually panning out. I believe it’s a Walgreens in California cited it, but the data didn’t back it up.” In response, Walgreens told the Times that crime “has evolved beyond shoplifting and petty theft to the sale of stolen and counterfeit goods online.” As organized crime remains one of the top challenges, security costs at Walgreens’ San Francisco stores have shot up 46 times the national average.

Nearly 600 Scientists, Mathematicians Rip California’s Math Curriculum Plans:

Nearly 600 scientists and mathematicians have signed a letter conveying “deep concern” over California’s recent steps to reform its mathematics curriculum for K-12 students that are purportedly designed to close gaps in pupil achievement. “We are deeply concerned about the unintended consequences of recent well-intentioned approaches to reform mathematics education, particularly the California Mathematics Framework (CMF),” the letter read. It criticized the “one size fits all” approach the CMF takes to K-12 mathematics education, arguing that the reforms would make it more difficult for students to succeed in college STEM classes.

The California Department of Education’s reforms to the mathematic framework would include “supporting equitable and engaging mathematics instruction.” The new reforms would do this in-part by opening the door for advanced data science and statistics courses available to all students, rather than those “selected as mathematically oriented in younger grades.” The reforms also advise teachers to “teach towards social justice,” arguing that teaching mathematics as a “neutral discipline” has “occluded possibilities for students to develop more personal and powerful relationships to mathematics.” The authors of the letter point out that the reforms may leave public school students disadvantaged when compared to students in private schools as well as students internationally.

AARP Rakes In Record Profits Selling Brand Royalties While Overcharging Members:

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) raked in massive profits in 2020, mostly from royalties on branded health insurance policies, not memberships, according to company financial documents. AARP’s 2020 Form 990 shows that the organization reported $1.6 billion in revenue, with roughly $1 billion, or over 60%, from royalty revenue. Meanwhile, membership dues contributed under 20% of total revenue. AARP’s 2019 Form 990 reported $1.72 billion in revenue, with royalties making up nearly 56% of revenue while membership dues contributed just 17%.

The organization’s business effectively overcharges seniors who purchase insurance coverage from the organization – including Medicare supplemental policies, called Medigap insurance – to fund its own operations,” Juniper Research Group Founder and Chief Executive Chris Jacobs wrote in an August 2020 American Commitment report. AARP is designated a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization by the IRS, but the company has consistently made large profits due to the group’s marketing practices, according to the report.

The Esperanza Patient:

Scientists have identified the second known person whose body is believed to have cleared H.I.V. from their system without the use of drugs or medical intervention. Researchers hope genetic analysis of the patient’s cells may lead to new treatments to fight the disease. Known as the “Esperanza patient,” the Argentine woman was found to have H.I.V. in 2013. Despite the diagnosis, the patient never displayed any symptoms, with subsequent tests failing to show evidence the virus was replicating within her body. Researchers went as far as to test samples of her placenta, a rich source of immune cells; a study published this week revealed no signs of the virus. The first known case is believed to be a 67-year-old California woman whose body suppressed the virus for almost three decades before appearing to eradicate it. Doctors have also achieved sustained remission in two patients via a specialized bone marrow transplant.

Iran Hackers Stole U.S. Voter Data, Posed as Proud Boys in Effort to Influence 2020 Election:

Members of an Iranian hacking group accessed confidential U.S. voting information and infiltrated a media outlet’s computer network in an attempt to intimidate Democratic voters in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, federal prosecutors said. The two suspects, who were indicted by a grand jury in Manhattan federal court, downloaded confidential voter data from 100,000 voters in an unnamed state in September and October 2020, prosecutors said. They then used the data in an attempt to intimidate voters by sending out threatening emails while posing as members of the far-right group the Proud Boys, according to the indictment. “You are currently registered as a Democrat and we know this because we have gained access into the entire voting infrastructure,” the email stated. “You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you. Change your party affiliation to Republican to let us know you received our message and will comply,” it continued. Also in October 2020, the hackers sent emails and social media messages to members of the Trump campaign, Republican lawmakers and members of the media that claimed Democrats were planning to alter mail-in ballots and register non-existent voters, prosecutors charged. The messages included a video that purported to show a member of the Proud Boys hacking into state voter websites and using stolen voter information, according to the feds.

New York Moves to Allow 800,000 Noncitizens to Vote in Local Elections:

New York City lawmakers are poised to allow more than 800,000 New Yorkers who are green card holders or have the legal right to work in the United States to vote in municipal elections and for local ballot initiatives. The bill, known as “Our City, Our Vote,” would make New York City the largest municipality in the country to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. The legislation, expected to be approved by the City Council on December 9 by a veto-proof margin, comes as the country is dealing with a swath of new laws to impose voter restrictions, as well as the economic and demographic effects of a decline in immigration. Voters in Alabama, Colorado and Florida passed ballot measures last year specifying that only U.S. citizens could vote. The states joined Arizona and North Dakota in specifying that noncitizens could not vote in state and local elections.
