*FILTH FESTIVAL – Starbucks Employees Challenged to Serve Those Who Aren’t Buying:

The young man walking back and forth from his seat to the packaged food section in the Starbucks store looked suspicious, recounted a store manager. In the past, she said she might have asked him to leave. Instead of confronting him, or calling the police, the manager talked to the man — who said he was hungry and homeless. She said she then gave him and a friend breakfast.

The anonymous incident was recounted in a much anticipated report released Wednesday as Starbucks Corp. seeks to mend its reputation after a highly publicized confrontation in Philadelphia last April where a store manager called police on two black patrons who later said they were waiting for a business meeting to start before ordering. In response to the Philadelphia uproar, Starbucks now is training employees to treat anyone who walks into the door as a customer, whether they intend to make a purchase or not. The fresh take on Starbucks’ long-time goal of creating a “third space” — a public place for interaction and leisure away from home and work — offers a fresh set of challenges, employees said in the report prepared for Starbucks by a law firm to measure progress on diversity and inclusion.

“In each of my listening sessions, partners shared how difficult it is to achieve this goal in communities that are deeply affected by addiction, mental illness, or homelessness,” former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who assisted with the study, wrote in a letter included in the 67-page report from Covington & Burling LLP. “These conversations highlighted a powerful tension between Starbucks’ efforts to create a welcoming third place on the one hand, and the realities of life in our most vulnerable communities on the other.”

*Companies Get Existential About Climate Change:

The harmful impacts climate change could have on big business might cause you to trade in your pickup truck for a vehicle that runs entirely on recycled body heat. UK-based nonprofit CDP, which asks firms to disclose how climate change may affect their businesses, released its annual report card yesterday. Here’s what keeps companies up at night, per Bloomberg

    •    Bank of America is concerned homeowners facing flooding could default on mortgages.

    •    Disney worries its theme parks will become (even more) unbearably hot.

    •    AT&T is losing sleep over the prospect of hurricanes and wildfires knocking out its cell towers.

    •    Coca-Cola bites its nails wondering if there will still be enough water to make soda.

    •    Visa worries that global warming could increase pandemics and armed conflicts… in turn slashing global travel demand.

    •    Apple? It said that more disasters would make iPhones more indispensable. Touché.

Temperature check: These companies’ revelations show how widely climate change could rattle the economy, from supply chains to operations to demand.

*Italy to pay just $21K in damages to Amanda Knox after she sought millions:

Italy was ordered on Thursday to pay Amanda Knox just over $20,000 after a court found her rights were violated when she wasn’t given an interpreter or access to a lawyer during a night of questioning about the murder of her roommate in 2007. “Ms. Knox had been particularly vulnerable, being a foreign young woman, 20, at the time, not having been in Italy for very long and not being fluent in Italian,” the European Court of Human Rights noted.

Knox, now 31, took Italian authorities to court for the way she was treated during an interrogation following the death of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia — where she falsely accused an innocent Congolese barman of being involved in the murder. “I was interrogated for 53 hours over five days, without a lawyer, in a language I understood maybe as well as a 10-year-old,” Knox said in a statement to the court.

In its ruling, the court said Italy hadn’t succeeded in proving that “the restriction of Ms. Knox’s access to a lawyer … had not irreparably undermined the fairness of the proceedings as a whole.”

*Mark Zuckerberg Once Killed and Served his Own Goat to Jack Dorsey:

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg killed one of his own goats and served it up cold to Jack Dorsey for dinner, the Twitter CEO has revealed. In a move that may mortify many Facebook users with a propensity for posting pictures of what’s on their plates, Dorsey revealed to Rolling Stone that mild-mannered Zuckerberg massacred the goat with a laser gun and a knife, then cooked it. Dorsey said, “There was a year when he was only eating what he was killing. He made goat for me for dinner. He killed the goat.”

Asked if Zuckerberg slaughtered the goat in front of him, Dorsey responded, “No. He killed it before. I guess he kills it. He kills it with a laser gun and then the knife. Then they send it to the butcher.” Clarifying the type of “laser gun” used, Dorsey explained, “I don’t know. A stun gun. They stun it, and then he knifed it. Then they send it to a butcher. Evidently in Palo Alto there’s a rule or regulation that you can have six livestock on any lot of land, so he had six goats at the time. I go, ‘We’re eating the goat you killed?’ He said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Have you eaten goat before?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, I love it . . . I said, ‘Where is the goat?’ ‘It’s in the oven.’

*Notre Dame Joins Crusade Against Columbus, To Cover Up Murals:

The war on Columbus has been going on for a while—and it’s to be expected in far-left enclaves like Berkeley—but it’s sad to see America’s foremost Catholic university join in the crusade. The Rev. John Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame, announced Sunday that school officials would cover murals of Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer credited with discovering the New World.
In a statement to the school, Jenkins said some found the murals offensive because they were “blind to the consequences of Columbus’s voyage for the indigenous peoples,” and saw them as demeaning. Jenkins acknowledged some of Columbus’ contributions, but said that wasn’t enough to leave the murals uncovered at his school.

“For the native peoples of this ‘new’ land … Columbus’s arrival was nothing short of a catastrophe,” Jenkins wrote. “Whatever else Columbus’s arrival brought, for these peoples it led to exploitation, expropriation of land, repression of vibrant cultures, enslavement, and new diseases causing epidemics that killed millions.” Of course, exploitation and enslavement existed in the Americas long before Columbus ever showed up.

*1 in 5 Millennials with Debt Expect to Die Without Ever Paying it Off:

The average millennial (aged 18 to 34) had about $32,000 in personal debt, excluding home mortgages, last year, according to Northwestern Mutual’s 2018 Planning & Progress Study. That debt can feel both crushing — and endless.

Just over 60 percent of millennials (classified here as those aged 18-37) with debt don’t know when, or if, they’ll ever be able to pay off what they owe, according to a new CreditCards.com report. That includes roughly 42 percent of millennials who don’t know when they’ll be able to wipe out their debt, and almost 20 percent of those who expect to die in debt.

The number of adults who think they have a food allergy is almost double the figure who actually have one, research has revealed. While the study was conducted in the US, experts say a similar situation is also seen in other countries, including the UK. The researchers found that many people with an allergy do not have a prescription for potentially life-saving medication, while others might be avoiding foods unnecessarily.

The study suggests almost 11% of adults in the US have a food allergy, equating to more than 26 million people. About 12 million of these are estimated to have developed the allergy as an adult, highlighting that allergies do not only begin in childhood.

Most people who take heroin will become addicted within 12 weeks of consistent use. After 12 weeks, withdrawal symptoms can begin in as little as 2 hours after taking a hit. It generally takes about 72 hours for withdrawal symptoms from heroin to reach their peak.

AT&T thinks YouTube is safe for advertisers again. The company, one of the nation’s biggest marketers, yanked its dollars from YouTube in 2017 because its ads were appearing alongside offensive videos. But on Friday, AT&T said it had been persuaded to resume advertising on the video platform.

The decision reflects the progress that Google-owned YouTube has made with advertisers in the 22 months since a number of them discovered that some of their ads were appearing during, or before, videos promoting hate speech, terrorism and other disturbing content. AT&T was among the first companies that stopped paying to advertise on YouTube, telling it that they wouldn’t return until it made improvements. YouTube has since introduced a series of changes aimed at making the platform “brand safe” — that is, an appropriate place for companies to run advertisements.

It has raised the number of subscribers and the viewership that video makers must have in order to carry ads, and is subjecting videos to more human and automated oversight.

Four (4) members of Senator Elizabeth Warren’s Senate office along with 12 members of the White House staff, 3 Nobel Prize winners, over 100 Academy Award winners, 6 U.S. Senators, and over 300 Grammy Award winners.
    *EXAMINER–COMMENTARY by Thomas L. Friedman:
For me, the most disturbing thing about the Trump presidency is the way each week, like a steady drip of acid, Donald Trump tries to erode the thing that truly makes us great as a country and the envy of so many around the world — the independence and nonpartisan character of our courts, our military, our F.B.I., our Border Patrol and our whole federal bureaucracy. No modern president has been more willing to use U.S. service members or border police as props for his politics, to blithely declare without evidence that most of the 800,000 federal workers going unpaid during the government shutdown are Democrats, to refer to the Pentagon leadership as “my generals” and “my military,” and to denounce different federal judges who have ruled against him as a “so-called judge,” an “Obama judge” and a “Mexican” judge (even though he was born in Indiana).

Why is this so important? Because America’s core governing institutions were not built to be “conservative” or “liberal.” They were built to take our deepest values and our highest ideals and animate them, promote them and protect them — to bring them to life and to scale them. They are the continuity that binds one generation of Americans to the next and the beacon for how we work together to build an ever more perfect union.

At their best, these institutions have created the regulatory foundations and legal and security frameworks that have made America great — that have enabled innovation to be sparked, commerce to flourish and ideas to freely blossom. Rather than serving any party or person’s whims, these institutions have promoted and protected enduring American values, laws, norms and ideals.

*BOILING POINT – Record Numbers of Americans Say They Care About Global Warming, Poll Finds:

A record number of Americans understand that climate change is real, according to a new survey, and they are increasingly worried about its effects in their lives today. Some 73 percent of Americans polled late last year said that global warming was happening, the report found, a jump of 10 percentage points from 2015 and three points since last March.

The rise in the number of Americans who say global warming is personally important to them was even sharper, jumping nine percentage points since March to 72 percent, another record over the past decade. The survey is the latest in a series from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication. It was conducted online in November and December by Ipsos, which polled 1,114 American adults.

*HORROR! – Murders in Mexico Rise by a Third in 2018 to New Record:

Murders in Mexico rose by 33 percent in 2018, breaking the record for a second year running, official data showed, underlining the task facing the new president who has pledged to reduce violence in the cartel-ravaged country. Investigators opened to 33,341 murder probes compared with the previous year’s record of 25,036, according to information from the Interior Ministry published on Sunday.

Mexico has struggled with years of violence as the government has battled brutal drug cartels, often by taking out their leaders. That has resulted in fragmentation of gangs and increasingly vicious internecine fighting. The complexity of fighting criminal groups is a major test for President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who assumed office in December, vowing to try a different approach to his predecessor.

*AIRLINE B.S. – These Days, ‘You Practically Need a Ph.D.’ to Figure Out Frequent-Flier Status:

The airlines’ most valuable customers, those who fly most often and spend the most money, receive the sorts of benefits that most travelers can only salivate over — lounge access, free checked luggage, free upgrades, free itinerary changes. But most travelers aren’t constantly flying, and they will find that the airlines have made it a lot more complicated to qualify even for a piece of that good life. “You practically need a Ph.D.” to understand and compare all the complex rules among the different airlines, said Jamie Larounis of the travel blog The Forward Cabin.

Three of the major airlines in the United StatesUnited AirlinesDelta Air Lines and American Airlines, each have four frequent-flier status levels and different formulas to compute the tiers. Alaska Airlines has three tiers and Southwest Airlines two; JetBlue has one. In the past few years most airlines have added spending requirements to their frequent-flier programs. Customers seeking elite status first need to understand that not all miles flown and dollars spent are equal. There are “qualifying” miles and dollars (sometimes called elite qualifying, medallion qualifying or premier qualifying). Those count toward achieving status with the airline. Other miles and dollars can be redeemed for flights or other items but do not help the flier get the top benefits. To figure out which miles and dollars qualify for status, travelers often have to read the fine print on airline websites.

A flier who has attained MVP status — the lowest frequent-flier status — on Alaska earns, for example, 50 percent bonus miles on flights they take. Those miles can be used only to redeem tickets or other items; they do not count toward achieving next year’s MVP status. The same fliers earn bonus miles if their ticket is booked in one of six of the 15 fare classes that grant bonuses. These miles do qualify toward elite status.

A number of months ago, I listened to a podcast that has haunted me since — because it captures something essential about our culture warrior moment. It was from NPR’s always excellent “Invisibilia” series and it was about a woman named Emily.

Emily was a member of the hard-core punk music scene in Richmond, Va. One day, when she was nearly 30, she was in a van with her best friend, who was part of a prominent band. They were heading to a gig in Florida when the venue called to cancel their appearance. A woman had accused Emily’s best friend of sending her an unwelcome sexually explicit photograph.

His bandmates immediately dismissed her allegations. But inwardly Emily seethed. Upon returning to Richmond, she wrote a Facebook post denouncing her best friend as an abuser. “I disown everything he has done. I do not think it’s O.K. … I believe women.”

The post worked. He ended up leaving the band and disappeared from the punk scene. Emily heard rumors that he’d been fired from his job, kicked out of his apartment, had moved to a new city and was not doing well. Emily never spoke with him again.

A poll of LBN Examiner readers from all 50 of the United States and 26 foreign countries has revealed that a huge majority find Examiner “fearless independent” and “unbiased”.

Summing up the feelings of many in the poll, Dr. Oliver Smith from London, England said: “Today, almost all media have a bias, liberal or conservative, left or right. Very, very few seem dedicated to the brutal facts, in other words the truth. The LBN Examiner is extraordinary in its independence and has earned my loyal readership.”

*Sarah Silverman Calls Out Women’s March Leader:

The Women’s March is rapidly losing high-profile left-wing supporters. After a series of reports exposing overt anti-Semitism among its leadership, more and more once-vocal supporters have either quietly pulled away or taken to various platforms to call the leaders out. Among those doing the former are some Democratic presidential hopefuls, who have managed to find various ways to be busy during the march’s big 2019 event this weekend. Among the latter are a few celebrities, including actresses Alyssa Milano and Debra Messing, and, now, comedian Sarah Silverman.

On Wednesday, Silverman took to Twitter to call out Women’s March leader Tamika Mallory for refusing to denounce notorious racist and anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan despite repeated opportunities to do so.

“I cannot imagine having such mild feelings over such a furious hatred of an entire people. He calls us termites,” she wrote of Mallory, referencing one of Farrakhan’s recent openly anti-Semitic comments in which he compared Jews to “termites” needing to be exterminated. “I’m heartbroken but I’m gonna stay hopeful because I don’t wanna give up on Tamika.

*Backlash Builds Against Gillette Over ‘Toxic Masculinity’ Campaign:

Facing a declining share of the men’s razor market as new competitors like Harry’s and the Dollar Shave Club have entered the razor game, Gillette decided it was time to … risk alienating a large percentage of their potential customers with a politically charged declaration of war on the Left‘s favorite bugaboo: “Toxic Masculinity.”

The move has already triggered the response that any first-year marketing student could’ve predicted in today’s climate: a hashtag boycott movement by people fed up with identity politics, complete with images of people trashing their “anti-masculinity” razors.

The commercial, released by Procter & Gamble’s Gillette on Monday, asks, “Is this the best a man can get?” while video and audio clips focusing on sexual harassment, bullying and abuse play. At one point, a line of men standing with their arms crossed behind grills chant in response to all the awful behavior by men: “Boys will be boys!”

*Actor James Woods: ‘I Have Never Traveled Unarmed Since That Day’:

Conservative actor James Woods took to Twitter on Tuesday to explain the life-changing experience that ensured he would never again travel without a firearm. Woods recalls how he once feared for his life when an armed robber on the subway put a gun to his head:

“I was robbed at gunpoint in a New York subway in my twenties. When a stranger puts a loaded gun to your head, you feel certain your life is over at that moment. Don’t even discuss it, if it hasn’t happened to you. I have never traveled unarmed since that day.”

    *British Public School: Boys
    Can Have Periods Too:

In what can only be described as a rejection of biology and reason, the Brighton & Hove City Council in southeast England recently approved LGBT guidelines for its schools whereby students will be taught that “menstruation must be inclusive of all genders,” apparently including biological males and transgender females.

Mensturation, however, only occurs in biological females with a uterus. As Merriam-Webster states, menstruation is “a cyclical discharging of blood, secretions, and tissue debris from the uterus that recurs in nonpregnant breeding-age primate females at approximately monthly intervals and that is considered to represent a readjustment of the uterus to the nonpregnant state following proliferative changes accompanying the preceding ovulation.”

If you are not a biological female with a uterus, you don’t menstruate. Nonetheless, the Brighton & Hove City Council’s advice to teachers states, “Trans boys and men and non-binary people may have periods,” and “menstruation must be inclusive of all genders,” reported The Telegraph in Britain.

“Bins used for menstruation products will be provided in all toilets for children, according to the report,” said the newspaper.  Also, “transgender students and pupils” will be “provided with additional support from a school nurse if needed.”

In a statement, the city council said, “By encouraging effective education on menstruation and puberty, we hope to reduce stigma and ensure no child or young person feels shame in asking for period products inside or outside of school if they need them.”

    *EXAMINER–COMMENTARY by David Brooks:
Capitalism is a wonderful system. The populists are perpetually living in 2008, when the financial crisis vindicated all their prejudices. They ignore everything since — the 19 million jobs that have been created, the way wages are now rising at 3.2 percent.

But capitalism needs to be embedded in moral norms and it needs to serve a larger social good. Remoralizing and resocializing the market is the great project of the moment. The crucial question is not: How can we have a good economy? It’s: How can we have a good society? How can we have a society in which it’s easier to be a good person?
