SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER SWORN IN ON STACK OF GAY PORN INSTEAD OF BIBLE:

A school board member in Virginia took his oath of office with his hand not on a Bible, but on a stack of books containing graphic depictions of gay sex. Karl Frisch, who will become chairman of the Fairfax County School Board, swapped the Bible for books including “Lawn Boy,” “Gender Queer,” and “Flamer.” His male partner held the books as he placed his left hand on them and his right hand in the air.

    Terror Plot In Germany:

European officials said they had detained four men – three in Germany and one in the Netherlands – on suspicions of plotting terror attacks on Jewish sites across Europe. The suspects are believed to be members of Hamas – authorities said one person had been tasked with locating a stockpile of weapons that had been secretly stored in the past. Authorities said there was not a direct link with the Israel-Hamas war, as their investigation preceded Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel.

    More Disabled People Are Working:

The share of people with disabilities who are employed – 22.9% in November – is hovering around its highest level in Bureau of Labor Statistics records going back to 2008. (The average since June 2008 is 18.8%. The peak was 23% in August.) A continued shortage of labor has made employers more open to hiring disabled people, Bryon Bass, chief executive officer of the Disability Management Employer Coalition, wrote in an email. Long COVID slightly increased the number of working people who are disabled. Also, the COVID pandemic showed that “it absolutely is possible for us to work from home,” said Felicia Nurmsen, managing director for employer services at the National Organization on Disability. The option to work from home attracts some disabled people who otherwise might not seek employment.

Over 4 Hours Of Smartphone Use Leads To Serious Health Risks For Teens:

A new study warns that teenagers who use smartphones for over four hours a day are at a “serious” risk for specific health issues. Researchers say that increased smartphone use has been linked to psychiatric disorders, sleep disturbances, eye problems, and musculoskeletal issues. The study found that adolescents with more than four hours of daily smartphone use exhibited higher rates of stress, suicidal thoughts, and substance use compared to those with less usage. They also had a significantly higher rate of obesity.

Drunk And Asleep On The Job – Air Traffic Controllers Pushed To The Brink:

From left, Neil Burke, Michelle Hager and Ashley Smith, who recently left jobs as air traffic controllers, voiced concerns about staffing shortages and safety. One air traffic controller went into work drunk this summer and joked about “making big money buzzed.” Another routinely smoked marijuana during breaks. A third employee threatened violence and then “aggressively pushed” a colleague who was directing airplanes. The incidents were extreme examples, but they fit into a pattern that reveals glaring vulnerabilities in one of the most important protective layers of the nation’s vaunted aviation safety system. In the past two years, air traffic controllers and others have submitted hundreds of complaints to a Federal Aviation Administration hotline describing issues like dangerous staffing shortages, mental health problems and deteriorating buildings, some infested by bugs and black mold. There were at least seven reports of controllers sleeping when they were on duty and five about employees working while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    Vehicle Deaths In Rich Countries:

If the U.S. had made as much progress reducing vehicle crashes as other high-income countries had over the past two decades, about 25,000 fewer Americans would die every year. Smartphones have also become ubiquitous in other countries, of course. But American drivers seem to be addicted to their phones in ways that drivers elsewhere are not. Surveys suggest Americans spend more time on their phones while driving than people do in other countries. In part, this phenomenon may reflect this country’s culture, which emphasizes professional success and immediate gratification.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON IS INVESTING IN AI TO FUEL DRUG DISCOVERY:

In recent years, J&J has hired thousands of data scientists and digital specialists and spent hundreds of millions of dollars on their work – in one of the biggest bets in the healthcare industry on data science and artificial intelligence. The long game for the 137-year-old company is a goal that has seen a lot of hype but less concrete proof that it will become a reality: using AI for drug discovery.

Renters Are Paying More In Fees:

Fees for trash pickup, pest control, the use of a mailbox, and routine maintenance – many no more than five or 10 bucks each – are piling up for renters, straining the budgets of many tenants whose wages didn’t keep up with rent increases during the COVID-19 pandemic. While rent growth has since flattened in much of the country, large property-investment companies continue with these add-ons to boost their bottom lines, saying it is a way to compensate for rising operating costs. The federal government and some states are pushing back.

A 2023 study from Flash Pack, a group-trip operator, suggests solo bookings for holiday travel are on the rise, particularly among millennials who might prefer to swap chaotic family dinners for “me” time.
